According to a City News Service report published August 12, 2026, a 59-year-old man was killed after his bicycle collided with a big rig near Siempre Viva Road and Otay Center Drive in Otay Mesa. The collision reportedly occurred at approximately 2:17 p.m. Tuesday.

San Diego police said the 38-year-old truck driver was traveling southbound on Otay Center Drive and making a right turn onto Siempre Viva Road with a green light. The bicyclist was reportedly traveling southbound on the right side of the truck when the bicycle impacted the truck’s front-right wheel.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity had not been released at the time of the initial report pending notification of his family. Police also stated that alcohol was not believed to have contributed to the crash.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain subject to investigation, and the reported facts alone do not establish legal fault.

For San Diego cyclists and their families, however, the tragedy highlights an especially dangerous type of traffic conflict: a bicycle traveling alongside a large commercial vehicle that is turning right.

Was the cyclist visible before the truck began turning? Where was the bicycle positioned? Was there a bicycle lane? When did the truck’s turn signal activate? Did either party have an opportunity to avoid the collision? Were mirrors or cameras available and functioning? What did nearby surveillance footage show?

Those facts can be far more important to a liability investigation than simply determining that the traffic signal was green.

Depending on the circumstances, certain surviving family members may have the right to pursue a California wrongful death claim when another person’s or entity’s negligence causes a fatal bicycle accident.
