What Happened in the SR-67 Crash?

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Nissan Frontier and a Nissan Rogue collided on State Route 67 just south of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road shortly before 11 a.m. on Monday. The Rogue overturned, and a small fire broke out. A passing witness put out the fire and then left the scene. One person was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene.

The CHP closed SR-67 between San Vicente Avenue and Scripps Poway Parkway while officers investigated. Authorities have not released the victim’s name or the cause of the crash.

On behalf of everyone at Jassim Law, I extend my deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

Why Are Crashes on SR-67 So Serious?

SR-67 is a key route between Lakeside, Poway, and Ramona. Much of it is a two-lane highway with curves, hills, and limited room for error. “On two-lane highways like SR-67, a single mistake, such as drifting over the center line, unsafe passing, or speeding into a curve, can lead to a head-on or side-impact crash at highway speed,” says Pajman Jassim. “When an SUV rolls over, the risk of fatal injury rises sharply.”

Common causes of crashes on rural San Diego County highways include:

  • Unsafe passing or crossing the double yellow line
  • Speeding on curves and grades
  • Distracted or fatigued driving
  • Driving under the influence
  • Poor visibility, road design issues, or inadequate signage

Who Can Be Held Liable for a Fatal Car Crash in California?

Fault in this crash has not been determined. Depending on the evidence, liable parties can include:

  • The at-fault driver, for negligent or reckless driving
  • An employer, if the driver was working at the time of the crash
  • A vehicle or parts manufacturer, if a defect such as roof crush or a seatbelt failure made injuries worse
  • A public agency, if a dangerous road condition contributed

“Witnesses are some of the most valuable evidence in a fatal crash case,” Jassim explains. “In this case, a bystander helped at the scene and then drove away. Finding people like that early can make a real difference.” Vehicle event data recorders, 911 call logs, and nearby camera footage can also help show how the collision happened.

What Compensation Can Families Recover After a Fatal Crash?

Under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60, eligible family members, such as a spouse, children, or dependents, may bring a wrongful death claim. Recoverable damages can include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support and household services
  • Loss of love, companionship, and guidance

A related survival action may recover certain losses the deceased person suffered before death. “If the at-fault driver has little or no insurance, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may also apply,” says Jassim.
