According to reporting on the crash and information released by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), investigators suspected alcohol and/or drugs were involved. The collision occurred at approximately 1:34 a.m. on August 27, 2023, on southbound Interstate 15 near Aero Drive in San Diego.

According to CHP, 32-year-old San Diego resident Yannira Rodriguez was driving a black Honda Fit southbound when a white Infiniti QX30 traveling north in the southbound lanes collided with her vehicle. The Infiniti subsequently struck a Nissan Altima before coming to a stop.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her teenage daughter, who was riding in the Honda, suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital. The 25-year-old driver of the Infiniti was also hospitalized, while the driver of the Nissan was reportedly uninjured.

CHP initially stated that alcohol and/or drugs were suspected as factors in the collision and continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The case later resulted in criminal charges.

Driver Charged Following Fatal San Diego Wrong-Way Collision

Subsequent reporting identified the Infiniti driver as Andres James Cox, who pleaded not guilty to charges that included gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

According to prosecutors, Cox’s blood-alcohol concentration was measured at 0.18%, more than twice California’s standard legal limit of 0.08% for most adult motorists. A prosecutor also alleged that Cox did not realize he was traveling in the wrong direction and that a drug-recognition expert concluded he was under the influence of marijuana.
